You do not "need" the plate as shown by the fact that Ford did not use them until 63 but they do index the starter properly when using the newer starters with the lip.

The down side to the T5 with the fulcrum, I don't think you'll find a boot to cover the fork opening. There was one off something like a F500 that fit but no longer available.
