Its production increases with evening darkness, promoting healthy sleep and helping to orient the body’s circadian rhythm. WebMelanopsin is triggered by specific wavelengths of light, and is most sensitive to wavelengths at and around 480 nm, or in layman's terms, primarily blue wavelengths. When melanopsin receptors in our eyes absorb light with blue wavelengths, it suppresses the production of melatonin, promoting alertness.
